Telephone Campaign 2011
Campaign success: OLs and OGs raise £60,000 for LGS and LHS
A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all LGS and LHS supporters
This summer a team of young students telephoned OLs and OGs throughout the UK and overseas, to talk to them about their memories of school days and to update them with School news. They also described the Schools' future plans and asked for support, which many OLs and OGs were happy to give.
Thanks to the very positive response from those we called, £60,000 was raised overall. This is wonderful news for the Burton Bursaries, the Science scheme and Schools Fund projects.
We also received many offers of help with careers and mentoring, which will be especially valuable to our senior students and we hope to utilise many of these generous offers in the coming year.
Our top callers were Tom Summerscales and Rajan Sharma for the Grammar School and Charlotte Aspinall and Jaspreet Assi for the High School. They win a visit and tour of the BBC TV Studios at Wood Lane, a prize kindly offered by our Campaign Champion, Stephen Mitchell.
We are all so heartened that the campaign was successful, promoted goodwill and raised much-needed funds and sourced valuable help with careers.
From our Campaign Champion: Stephen Mitchell, Head of Programmes, BBC
'I am pleased to Champion the Callers on this summer's telephone campaign. We live in an age of increasingly rapid information and communications; in my career at the BBC I've seen the world of communications transformed beyond all imagination.
Yet nothing beats a personal, friendly conversation. All of us share the experience of a fine education at Loughborough Endowed Schools and this has shaped our characters and our futures. It gives us so much to talk about! I feel privileged to be an Old Loughburian and to support my school, I hope that fellow OLs and OGs will feel the same also.'
Meet the Team:
Leonie Amarasekara - I am a former Deputy Head Girl of Loughborough High School from the Class of 2010. Currently, I am a first year Law student at Oxford University. Outside of my studies, I spend a lot of time rowing for my College. In addition, I enjoy music and girly chats with my friends. I am very excited to be part of the Telephone Campaign- LES has meant a lot to me and this is great opportunity to give back to the school I have loved.
My name is Charlotte Aspinall and I am currently in year 13 at Loughborough High School. I have been part of the Endowed Schools since I was 4 and have thoroughly enjoyed all the amazing opportunities open to me at this school. I used to be involved in sport, mainly in netball, whereas now I prefer to spend my time in either the Music or Drama departments. I play saxophone and sing to Grade 8 level and take part in Big Band. I’ve also sung in choirs and been part of many other smaller jazz groups. This year I’ve had the role of Drama Prefect, which has allowed me to work with the younger girls putting together shows, and more importantly, organising the exciting and intense House Drama. During my time at LES I’ve been able to visit many places, including France, Malta, Italy and America. My favourite part about LES is the environment for learning and developing: everyone is friendly and happy to help and I’ve made some lifelong friends here. I currently study Politics, French, Economics and Maths and I am hoping to study Philosophy with Political Economy at Exeter University in September.
My name is Jaspreet Assi. I was Head Girl at Loughborough High School and left in 2009. I undertook a gap year working for the accountancy firm Deloitte and have just completed my first year at Nottingham University, where I am doing a Modern Languages degree. I am thoroughly looking forward to being part of the LES telephone campaign this summer.
Hi, my name is Sam Barber, I’m 20 years old and in my second year studying History at Durham University. I was a senior prefect in the U6 year and I look back on my time at the Grammar very fondly, so I hope to use this campaign as an opportunity to give something back to the school. I especially remember the camaraderie and sense of identity within the 6th form and I think it is important for this to be cultivated in addition to the high level of academic achievement that LGS is known for. Outside of my studies, I enjoy music, reading, martial arts and playing the guitar, and I hope to pursue a career in academia (or wherever my subject takes me!). I very much look forward to speaking to you.
Hi, I’m Michael Barclay, a Year 13 student at Loughborough Grammar School. I’m studying Politics, Economics and History at A2, with a view to studying Politics at Exeter University in September. I am a keen hockey player, playing for both the Grammar School 1st XI and also my local team outside of school. As well as hockey, I also enjoy playing other sports such as football and golf more recreationally. As an aspiring Politics student, I follow current affairs very closely, especially American Politics, which I find particularly intriguing. I also have a great passion for music, playing both the drums and guitar. Being a House Vice-Captain this year I have had a great opportunities to get involved in numerous different activities with various year groups.
Hello! My name is Andy Bewley and I attended LGS from 2003-2010. My LGS years have shaped who I am, who I will become and the world I will make for myself - they were the best years of my life! I was a prominent member of the school’s sports teams and I represented both rugby and cricket first teams in my Sixth Form Years. I also (reluctantly: I was the Head of Abney and couldn’t really back down..) ran the 1500m in my final sports day, which goes down as one of my most memorable and lengthy school moments. I love Music and Drama and performed in many of the school choirs, and I sang with an ‘a capella’ group called “The Baritones” . Last year I played Mr Bumble in the LES production of “Oliver!”, basing my character on my dad (personality- wise, not physically!). I have recently completed a Musical Theatre Foundation Course at the Oxford School of Drama, and after many, many auditions, I have been offered a provisional place on Oxfords Prestigious Three Year Acting course, which I am beyond chuffed about! I love LGS and everything it stands for and despite not taking the generic route through to university, I am still hugely proud of my A-level results (A*, A, A in English, Philosophy and History) and the offer I received from Leeds University to study English and Philosophy
Layla Cox - My time at Loughborough High School was a very happy one, and it has carried me through to university where I have continued to enjoy many different activities in addition to my studies. During my time at LHS I was always active in the Music Department, and went on to be a Senior Prefect, about which I was immensely proud. The self-confidence and determination I learned have enabled me to take university life by the horns, working as a School Rep, Volunteering Ambassador and School Ambassador. I could not be more grateful for the invaluable skills I developed having attended LHS.
My name is Thomas Harker and I am from Gotham, Nottingham. I am currently studying Economics and Spanish at the University of Kent in Canterbury. I was a Loughburian between 2002 and 2009 and took major pride in the sporting side of the school. I was an LB Cup winner with the 1st XI Football and represented the 1st XI Cricket on the West Indies tour of 2007. Whilst at school I took an active part in the Combined Cadet Force and was in the Guard of Honour in the RAF for the Chief Commodore. I am currently the Vice-President of my college at the University of Kent and represent the football team there too. I am very excited to be on the campaign for this year as I believe it is a great opportunity to give back to the school that provided me with so many opportunities.
My name is Frances Hurst and I am in my final year at Loughborough High School. I am studying A levels in Classical Civilisation, Psychology and Geography. I am also house captain for Hastings, which is a really enjoyable as it allows me to get to know the younger girls and mix with the rest of the school. From this role I have learnt that it's not about being good at everything: for instance, I participated in house hockey during the summer term, having not played hockey for 3 years! My fear of the ball hindered me somewhat, but the sense of being part of a team and working together was really valuable. During the summer holiday I completed an Open University Food and Nutrition Course and it was great to find out facts about all the foods we eat. I sing in the LES Senior Choir and I have been attending Stagecoach for 9 years, where I have learnt to sing, dance and act. Performing in shows and going to auditions has been so much fun and I intend to carry it on when I go to university. My favourite hobby is skiing, which I do every year at Christmas with friends and family. After I leave the High School I hope to study Business Management at the University of Birmingham, and then go into retail and buying.
My name is Ravi Khiroya. I am currently in my first year of study for a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London. In my spare time I enjoy both playing and watching sports and am currently a member of the Imperial College Cricket Club. I also have a keen interest in reading and music. I find volunteering a rewarding experience and have had past experience in this area. At university I am a member of Engineers Without Borders, a society dedicated to using technology to find solutions to problems faced by the world today. My experience at Loughborough Grammar School was a very valuable one that enabled me to fulfil my potential and I hope that my involvement in the telephone campaign will help others to do the same.
My name is James Olphert, but I prefer Jim. I am currently reading English and Drama at the University of Sheffield. I studied at Loughborough Grammar School until 2009 and enjoyed my time there wholeheartedly, and am therefore glad to be involved with this telephone campaign. My interests range from reading, preferably modernist and postmodernist literature, performance through to cinema and playing bass guitar (badly I fear). I am also an avid amateur photographer with ambitions to make this part of my future career. Keeping true to my local roots I follow the progress of Leicester Tigers, feel free to bring up the recent season if you’d like! This is a great cause to be involved with and I look forward to speaking to you over the summer.
Hi, I'm Rajan Sharma. I'm 18 years old and will be going to university next year where I hope to study Economics. I have been at Loughborough Grammar School since year 6 and the time has just flown by. The school has developed so much since I have been here, so it would be fascinating to see how the school was during your time at the school. I enjoy all kinds of sport, but being brought up in a Cricket mad household it literally runs in my blood. I also love music! I cannot go a day without listening to some form of music however I don't have the patience to learn an instrument. Hope to speak to you soon!
Tom Summerscales has just finished his role as Deputy Head Boy at Loughborough Grammar for the 2010-2011 Academic year where he was also the 1st XV Rugby Captain, a Colour Sergeant within the Combined Cadet Force and a member of the LES Chamber Choir. He intends to study Sport and Exercise Science at Edinburgh University this coming September.
I am Jordan Thelan, currently studying Economics at Durham University. I left LGS last summer and was deputy Head Boy in my final year. My interests include Football, Cricket, Ice Hockey and Finance and my career aim is to work in Consulting / Investment Banking. I called on the Durham alumni campaign earlier this year so I’m interested to see how the LGS campaign compares and I’m looking forward to talking to other OLs.
My name is Arjun Vaghela and I attended Loughborough Grammar School from 2003-2010. I am 19 years old, live in Quorn, and am currently studying for a degree in Law at the University of Cambridge.During my time at the school I was similarly involved in several extra-curricular activities including fencing, the army section of the CCF and playing cricket for the school. I was also involved in the Music School activities: Senior Concert Band and Senior Choir which were very enjoyable. Outside of my degree I am involved in various activities such as tae kwon do, where my latest achievement has been getting a red-stripe belt, coxing boats for my college boat club (Trinity Hall), and music (I play the clarinet).
